Road Trip to John Gray High

On March 2nd the Flex took its first roadtrip of the Season of Entertainment. What an awesome trip it was. Our guests were Professor Powell and the Cayman Islands Marching Band. The show featured one song by Kevin Downswell "Change is coming" and all other music breaks featured the Marching Band with small tastes of their repetoire. They covered several popular song like OMG, California Girls, Run this town, Forget You, I got a feeling and then they had us awestricten with their rendition of the Cayman Islands National Song "Beloved Isle Cayman".

The Marching Band will be performing at the 44th Annual Agriculture Show next wednesday. it is the largest one day event inthe Cayman Islands with over 8,000 patrons. All Aggy Show patrons are going to be in for a treat with this band, for sure.

This was the first time YouthFlex has braodcasted from John Gray High School in its history. 90% of YouthFlex crew members attended John Gray but we never broadcasted from their school until March 2, 2011.

On February 23, the Flex opened the Season of Entertainment with a discussion with the CEO of the New Self Help Community Foundation about their upcoming free Songwriting workshop for teens with lead facilitator, recording artist, award winning song writer and talent pomoter E.A. Porter.

Our Determined Youth Of the Week was once again Tiffany Cole for her 2 minutes :30seconds run in the 800m at the George Town Track Meet on Saturday. She shaved 29 seconds off her personal best.

The format was a 7-A-Side tournament of the private High Schools in the Cayman Islands. There are plans to include Public School Academies in the future. This year the Private Schools will form an All-Star team to challenge Cayman Brac High, John Gray High , The Cayman Islands Further Education Centre and Clifton Hunter High School to home and away matches.

On January 19th the show was packed with excitement. We had Rita of CNCF as our guest to share information about the Youth Image Makers Short Film Competition, she was followed by Jamie and Josue of Palm Beach Atlantic University to promote their first open house here inGrand Cayman, they also visited CaymanBrac too, and as expected THEY LOVE OUR ISLANDS. The show's final in studio guest were teenage rising superstars Jru & Gio. They gave us a tease of their new singles that they plan to launch real soon. So listen out for Jru's "Lil Boss" and Gio's " Xbox" tearing up the air wave on radio stations around the globe. We also got a telephone call from Shane "Nobie" Edwards to promote the upcoming East End Surf Challenge that is scheduled for Heroes Day Holiday on January 24th. Determining The Way Forward for Youth Development in Cayman for 2011

On Wednesday January 12th the Flex had the staff of the Youth Services Unit as guest to talk about New Years resolutions and the plan and vision of youth development in the Cayman Islands for 2011. The YSU staff talked about how well or not welll they did on last years resolutions and shared their resolve 2011.

The show was broadcasted remotely from the Youth Services Unit on Mary Street, as the unit is scheduled to be relocated soon to another district. The Flex will keep you all infromed as to the new location.

The show featured the music of Gospel artist Jermaine Edwards

"Make you Smile" and "Love and Devotion". His album will be available in the Cayman Islands at our good friends Funky Tangs, your music and more store on Shedden Road.

Ending 2010 with our 5th Flexathon fundraiser

On December 29th the Flex held its 5th Flex-a-thon fundraiser to fund its remote broadcast from Cayman Brac in 2011. The fundraiser was quite sucessful raising $700 of the $1,100 target. Thanks to the financial support from Lee's Office Products, ORB Computer World, PKF Cayman Ltd, Sport N Zone, Tony's Toys Car Boutique, Al La Kebab, Cayman Brac Power & Light and our friends at Funky Tangs. We will be seeking four more companies in the upcoming weeks to help us reach the needed funds to make the trip and the show possible.

Youth Flex has not broadcasted from CaymanBrac since October 2008. The Radio Show had a Flexathon in December 2008 to bring "A Day of Joy" in Cayman Brac in January 2009 after the passage of Hurricane Paloma, that was a great sucess thanks to HSBC Cayman and other sponsors.

A historical event took place today as the Girl Guides Association of the Cayman Islands joined in with the United Kingdom and other Girl Guides around the world to close out their centenary, 100 years of service to young ladies all over the globe. Girl Guiding has affected the positive development of approximately 10 million women and girls globally. Today the celebrations were held all over Grand Cayman and the Flex Crew and the Youth Services Unit was there to capture the moment on film and through still photo.

On wednesday October 13th the show had its first remote broadcast of Season 28, the season of Determination, hosted by Kim Carlos at the Mary Miller Memorial Hall. Also on the show were staff and students from Cayman Academy telling us of their Reading Week activities along with students from Triple C School promoting their Talent Show. Determining the happenings at Cayman Academy

Wednesday October 6th marked the opening of the Season of Determination hosted by Kim. The season opener featured the three spokespersons of the 2010 Census, Ms Tammy Ebanks, Charles Brown and 2010 YCLA Recipient Collin Anglin. The Census will determine the future plans for the population in the Cayman Islands and it will also determine how many people are usually resident in the Cayman Islands in 2010. We also had guests from Cayman Academy on the show to promote their upcoming Reading Week. Their interview was a bit brief so they will be back again on Wednesday October 13 to complete thier interview and fill us in on the happenings of their Reading Week.

Next wednesday we hit the road to hangout at the Lighthouse School to speak with Special Olympic Athletes, their coaches and the staff and students of the Lighthouse School to see how determined they are at meeting their goals in life.

Season of Inspiration Finale on Caribbean Youth Day

A little dampened by the showers from Tropical Storm Nicole the youth of Cayman took to the airwaves on Wednesday to celebrate Caribbean Youth Day with a 3 hour radio broadcast thanks to Radio Cayman, The Youth Services Unit and Youth Flex Radio Show's sponsor PricewaterhouseCoopers. Wednesday also marked the end of Season 27, the Season of Inspiration that was hosted by Takiyah Smith and Joshua McFarlane. The last week in September also means another year in the books for our beloved radio show YouthFlex who has been broadcasting the voices of the youth of the Cayman Islands since September 24, 2001.Nine years old!

The Caribbean Youth Day radio dialogue was hosted by the Regional Youth Caucus Representative of the Cayman Islands Mikhail McLaughlin and his co-hosts was past RYC Kyle McLean and Miss Teen 2010-11 Miss Leanne Ritch from 3-4pm and 5-6pm. Their guests were youth from the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre, John Gray Memorial Church After School programme, Bodden Town FC, and a young lady from Cayman Brac. The programme also took calls from listeners so they heard the voices of those young and young at heart as well.

YouthFlex closed it season of Inspiration with a dialogue with Year 6 students from the primary schools in the George Town district. These schools are George Town Primary, Red Bay Primary , Lighthouse School, and Prospect Primary. George Town Primary was represented by Elianna Anglin, Red Bay Primary was represented by Kalie Broderick and Prospect Primary was represented by Ethan Hydes, Lighthouse school representive Jonathan McField was unable to attend the show due to miscommunication on transportation. We promise to make it up to you Jonathan!

The next season is the Season of Determination hosted by Kimberly Carlos and our first remote brodcast will be at the Lighthouse School, God's willing in October. We will be speaking to Special Olympic Athletes, their Coaches and Jonathan McField.

Honouring Women's Month see YouthFlex Queen of the Track Crowned

On March 10th YouthFlex saw the inagural "YouthFlex Queen of the Track" Race. Andrea "Annie" Watler finish on top of the podium while clocking the fastest lap of the race with 38.14 seconds,even faster than the boys in the race who were in the race to push the girls for fast lap times. Season Host Krista finished behind Annie and Kim placed third. Annie now has bragging right for twelve months as she reigns as "YouthFlex Queen of the track"Our guest on the Flex was Miriam Foster of the Family Resource Centre to talk about Honouring Women's Month activities along with local lady author Catherine Tyson to talk about her new book and the journey she has been on promoting the book "I'm Somebody's Mama" and Mr Alister Foster of Cayman Karting talking about what his plans are for the Go Kart track.

New Season , New Host, Season Opener of Illumination

On Wednesday March 3rd, YouthFlex opened it new season, the season of Illumination with 16 year old John Gray High School senior Krista Samuels at the helm along with co-host Kim and Takiyah. They were awesome and Krista handle her first remote broadcast masterfully. The topic was "Youth Entertainment" with guests from the Cayman Islands Youth Assembly, Ashvin, Daysha, Allison and Dejon. The remote broadcast was live from Burger King on Walkers Road. It was all good along with the 2 for $5 King Deals at Burger King that featured double Cheeseburgers on Wednesdays. Since March is Honouring Womens Month here in the Cayman Islands the music for the whole month of March will be done by women. The Music list for the season opener included:

On February 24th the Flex bid farewell to Andrel and the Season of Recognition. The show featured guests from Silver Thatch Pension's Student Stock trading programme and the 2010 YCLA Recipient Colin Anglin. The season was fairly quiet in terms of callers to the show with only 3 callers all season long until the finale that saw 6 callers to the show.

On February 10th, YouthFlex celebrated its 400th broadcast by calling a family huddle of past hosts and co-hosts at the sweetest spot in Cayman, "Cayman Honey" the home of Mr. Otto Watler, the sole bee keeper in the Cayman Islands. Mr. Otto is a faithful listener of the Flex since we went on air on September 24, 2001 and we thought it would be great to share the moment of celebrating our 400th show with him at his home while recognizing him for his contributions to the agricultural sector of the Cayman Islands for over 60 years.

On February 3rd, we had as in studio guest Mrs. Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, the Education Coordinator of the National Museum to talk about the new exhibits at the Museum and why young people need to visit and become members of the Museum. YouthFlex got a private tour on Sunday and I must say, the Museum is a must see for residents and visitors alike. Miss Martina Bodden the Inaugural Yentel McGaw Youth Community Excellence Awards Recipient was honoured on the show as well and she shared her acceptance speech, it was very moving and inspirational. Look for great things from Martina. Tianna Bodden President of the John Gray High School Business Club joined us on the Flex as well to promote the upcoming Mr. & Miss Valentine Talent Show scheduled for Saturday February 6th. Tickets cost $10 and the show starts at 7pm so get your ticket and be there early you don't want to miss a single moment of it, because it is going to be off the chains.

Road trip to bring recognition to a Transportation Issue

On January 27th YouthFlex took its first road trip this season to shed some light on a transportation issue at UCCI. The guests were Student Council President and Vice President Jodiann Jackson and Demaro along with the UCCI President Mr. Roy Bodden. We spoke about the plan for regular bus transportation for the UCCI students along with other cool things happening at the University College.

Some of our scheduled guests were unable to attend the live broadcast due to an ongoing search and rescue operation for 5 persons missing at sea. Captain Dwight Ebanks managed to make the show and we also had Miss Rita from the Cayman National Cultural Foundation in to talk about a Film Competition the Foundation is holding in partnership with the Cayman Film Industry for youth aged 10-15.

On December 16th the final show of Youth Flex for 2009, we sought to recognize Christ in Christmas by bringing in Pastor Gareth Haylock and former YouthFlex Host, now Youth Pastor Felix Manzanares. The duo shared their views on Christmas and shed some light on how young people can preserve the spirit of Christmas. On December 9th the Flex hosted former Flex host Matthew Hylton who is a returning graduate and working in the Department of Children and Family Services along with Ms Sylvia Wilks of the Cayman Islands Youth Development Consortium to talk about their careers and the highs and lows of their professions. We also highlighted the products of a Junior Achievement company called CIRCUS sponsored by PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The Flex's own Krista is the Vice President of Production but doubled in taking photo this week.

On December 2nd, the Flex recognized local doctors, Jazzfest performers and Disabled Persons. Our guests were Dr. Steve Tomlinson, Jeffrey Wilson, Rico Orrett-Ebanks and Rhonda Cornwall of the Cayman JazzFest and Mrs Mennen, Gabriella and Lorenzo from the Lighthouse School.

Photography was done by Leanna Dixon and the featured music this week was Gospel Rock Band MercyMe.

It was a challenge to have three different interviews in one hour but we managed to do so as a team. the Production Team consisted of Krista, Leanna, Ahmed, and James . The on air team was Andrel, Josh and Kim who sat in for Annie who had an after school activity that kept her away from the show this week.

On November 25th the Flex hosted Ms Melloney Bryan, School Leader of Leading Edge High School as part of our season of recognition the Flex was recognizing the contributions of teachers and school leaders in our community. Ms Bryan shared some of her fondest memories of being in charge of a learning institution as well as some of the challenges. She rolled out the carpet in terms of advice to young people and offered many words of encouragement to youth to get involved in positive activities and stay involved.

On November 18th the Flex recognized Environmental Champions in our community. Mrs. Joni Kirkconnell, of the Sustainable Development Unit, Ms Diane Conolly of the Department of Tourism and three Disney Environmentality Challenge Champion students Venee Cornwall, Ashley Jacaban and Zachary Wright from George Town Primary School were our guests to talk about their 2009 Winning Environmentality project.

In partnership with John Gray High School and the Public Library the Word of the Week was ANALOGOUS which means; similar in some respects.

Chris Bodden a High School Senior at Cayman Prep High School was attached to the Youth Services Unit for four days from November 10-13. While on work experience Chris helped to design the layout of the 2010 Youth Services Directory, assist with the running of the Cayman Islands Youth Assembly Executive Elections, assisting the YouthFlex production team on November 11th broadcast, writing of the scripts and selecting music for YouthFlex Radio Show for November 18th broadcast and also wrote an article for the Youth Services Unit's "The Advocate".

Every member of staff of the Youth Services Unit was very impressed with the maturity and passion of Chris to youth development and has high hopes for Chris the the social development field, whether in youth development or youth governance or public service.

In November 2008, the Youth Services Unit had a logo competition for the presently piloted youth awards programme Youth Passport, that was called for by the National Youth Policy of the Cayman Islands. This season Kim hosts a segment on the Flex to keep everyone updated on the programme's delivery in "The Update".

The logo competition was won by 19 year old Jason Parchment of West Bay who sketches as a pastime and is also one of Cayman's rising Boxing stars to follow in the footsteps of our once World Champion, Charles"the Killer" Whittaker.

Jason's sketch was digitized by a very talented graphic artist Miss Martha Conolly of Say Wha Designs.

His logo depict a thumbs up out of the sea in the fore of a brilliant sunrise surrounded by ropes that used to be an historical trade of the Cayman Islands under the banner of the slogan "Get involved & shine".

This very humble artist and aspiring boxer, Jason was interviewed by Kim on the Update on Friday November 13th at the Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gymnasium to be aired on Wednesday November 18th on the Flex.

Recognition of Seamen and Veterans on Remembrance Day

Novemebr 11th , Remembance Day saw YouthFlex host Captain Paul Hurlston and Sergeant Shane Bothwell. Capt. Paul is in his eighties and recalls moments of World WarII as a schoolboy in Cayman, while retired Sergant Bothwell in his mid thirty tells stories of modern day conflicts in Afganistan , Iraq and in Africa. He shared that we here in the Cayman Islands have so much to be thankful for, because there are on open conflicts that is a way of life as other nations around the world grapple with on a daily basis. In partnership with the Public Library our Word of the Week was Valiant, and we on the Flex truly were honoured to host and recognize these two valiant members of our society who brave the sea and war to provide the foundation for economic development, peace and freedom.

On November 4th , Cayman's first Premier Hon. McKeeva Bush was the guest on the Flex. The Premier and Minister of Financial Services, Tourism and Development was so busy with his tasks, that he was late in getting to the show, but it made for a historic occasion that saw the Flex broadcast for 1 hour and thirty three minutes, the longest YouthFlex broadcast as a Season opener. The show was another great one and the moments of bidding farewell was touchy but the Flex family continues to evolve and grow. Lily's farewell has given way for two new male Flex crew members and now the 2009 Flex Crew is on the prowl to select the next two Flex members by December 18th.

Today the Youth Services Unit and Youth Flex Radio Show commemorated Caribbean Youth Day with a High School Student Dialogue at the Cayman International School live on Youth Flex. The student was to talk on the subject "Youth mainstreaming, critical to Sustainable Development". The show was great and the answers the youth gave to the engaging questions was awesome and very mature. Music was limited for this show to two local tracks by JG feat Mr. Given "Love & Peace" and an awesome collaboration of various local artist with "Save our Youth". We had two representatives of each high school on Grand Cayman.

Honourable Mike Adam, Minister of Community Affairs and Housing spoke with the Flex Crew on peace and how the community can allow their young people to become postive contributors. After a breif hiatus the Flex blasted back into activity this week with a very packed show that saw the newly crowned Miss Teen Cayman Islands 2009-10 Jamesette Anglin, CARICOM Youth Ambassador for the Cayman Islands Carla Martin and Clayton Powell of Youth For Christ. Miss Teen arrived to the show right after school and was not decked with her crown and sash so the Flex Crew respectfully did not photograph her. On January 17, 2009 the Youth Flex Radio Show Crew along with Mrs. Jerrian Myles travelled to Cayman Brac to bring a Day of Joy to the students on the island. The day was truly awesome and although the workload was great. The Crew did repairs tothe roof of the Creek Youth Development Centre, repainted the walls and provided a dinner for all 250 students on the island and some of their parents.

The new host of Youth Flex is Kadane Hall . This season of Focus is to encourage everyone to be prudent and to do the will of God in every thought, word and deed.

The season started with special guest 13 year old Victoria Bise who organised a toy drive during the Christmas hoildays for the needy children in the Cayman Islands. We on the Flex thought that these positive contributions by young people should be our FOCUS this season. We also has Ms. Heather Bodden the chairman of the Cayman Islands Beautification Committe and her deputy Mrs. Alice Mae Coe to share their desires for the Cayman Islands in 2009. it was simply : "Lets keep Cayman Clean and Green"

Miss Cayman on the Flex

The newly crowned Miss CaymanIslands 2008-09 is non other than a past Youth Flex Reporter 25 year old Nicosia Lawson. She graced the Flex with her presence and was the sole guest for show # 339. She mentioned that she felt at home on the Flex, and offer encouragement to the present Flex Crew to take advantage of the opportuniy offered to them through Youth Flex Radio Show. She to her platform which is the reduction of HIV/AIDS and awareness on ways to eradicate this pandemic that is reeking havoc on the world especially Africa and the Caribbean.

Youth Flex seasons all bear a theme and this season is the season of commitment. The Flex is committed to the development of the Cayman Islands by promoting the Constitiutional Modernization process, along with other positive youth developments.

In December the Radio show held its first Flex-a-thon fundraiser for youth programmes. We raised $1,400 thanks to our Flex-a-thon sponsors, Lee's Office Products, CAD Plus, Repographix, Cayman Bakery, Cayman Lenscrafters, Frankie's Fresh Fruits and Juices, Dominoes Pizza, Winners Circle Sports, Sport N Zone, Cyber Joes, Say Wha Designs, Cayman Camera and Funky Tangs.

In January there were several outstanding guest on Youth Flex ranging from Jneezy of CBR to Tourism Minister Hon. Charles Clifford to former Education Minister Mr. Roy Bodden to Sports Ambassador Kareem Streete Thompson, former Youth Flex Host Felix Manzanarez and Dwayne Seymour of the Xposure Group to National Parenting Programme officials. In fact there was many significant events in January for Youth Flex Radio Show and the National Youth Ambassadors Group. Mrs. Anne Rice came in today to talk with us about her experience with the Elijah Generation. Todays show was to be broadcast from Little Cayman but will be scheduled for another date. We called our friends in the Sister Islands, PC Rob Stewart on Domestic Violence and Jr Tourism Minister Nicholas DaCosta on Junoir Achievement in the Brac. It was all good man, we talked a little about Christmas and the history of Christmas Trees.
