Who determines Childhood Obesity? and who is healthy?











This Wednesday November 23rd saw Miss Cayman Cristin Alexander, Sports Coordinator for Women Mrs. Merta Day and Dr. Dalton Watler discuss the issue of Childhood Obesity and the attitudes surrounding the matter. We also had folks from the Cayman Islands Vollyball Federation share the plans for the upcoming Spikefest on the weekend along with the official training clinic for volunteers. Determining the standards for Men's Etiquette

On November 17th past Youth Flex host Victor Crumbley, Mitch Ebanks of UCCI and Mr. Steve McField were our guest to determine the standards and expectations of men in our society. Men's Etiquette was examined and the discussion was enlightening as expected. The passion and emotions was felt in every word. We will be posting some audio from the show soon. CIFEC to determine new features for Pirates Week
















On November 10th the Flex turned its attention on Pirates Week. Since the Further Education Centre students had an assignment to introduce something new to the week of activities , we wanted to determine if their idea would be a welcomed one. They talked about new activities and introducing a new energy drink tothe festival. Maybe their ideas might be used next year. The Youth Services Unit and the CIYA Determined to shape the future of Cayman











On November 3rd our guest were staff members of the Youth Services Unit and members of the Cayman Islands Youth Assembly. They were talking about the upcoming 3rd National Youth Forum and some of the issues the CIYA have resaerched in the past and has presented their position on the issues in terms of Position Papers to the Minister responsible for Youth Affairs. Season of Determination continues in October







October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Cayman Islands. So on October 27th we had three very young and beautiful breast cancer survivors on the show to tell their stories Mrs. Veronica Ebanks a mother of three, Ms Susan Barnes a mother of one and Mrs. Becky Ebanks a mother of two. The show was powerful and riveting. We also had the newly crown Miss George Town Mahaylia Seymour in studio to talk about her pageant experience.Here are some pictures of the show

Determining the Next Community Youth Icon
















On October 20, 2010. YouthFlex had as guest the 2010 YCLA recipient Collin Anglin and YCLA Coordinator Melissa Wolfe to talk about the nomination process in selecting the next YCLA Recipient. Also on the Flex was Hilary & Kieshagay of Women's Media Watch of Jamaica who has partnered with the Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation in a public awareness campaign called "Silence Hurts". Our finally guest on the Flex was Mr. Wiekert of the Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman to share with young people the wonderful opportunity offered to them to atend the Key Leaders Conference scheduled for the weekend.

YouthFlex Determined Youth of the Week was Alikie Kandler of Weslayan Christian Academy . She dances, she sings, she attends John Gray Memorial Friday Night Youth Group, she acts and she choregraphes presentations and was voted and chosen as Camp Girl last summer at the United Church Residential Teen Camp.

A historical event took place today as the Girl Guides Association of the Cayman Islands joined in with the United Kingdom and other Girl Guides around the world to close out their centenary, 100 years of service to young ladies all over the globe. Girl Guiding has affected the positive development of approximately 10 million women and girls globally. Today the celebrations were held all over Grand Cayman and the Flex Crew and the Youth Services Unit was there to capture the moment on film and through still photo.

A Special Show for special folks
















On wednesday October 13th the show had its first remote broadcast of Season 28, the season of Determination, hosted by Kim Carlos at the Mary Miller Memorial Hall. The show aimed to determine the dreams and drive of our Special Olympic athletes and student of the Lighthouse School [Special Education]. Also on the show were staff and students from Cayman Academy telling us of their Reading Week activities along with students from Triple C School promoting their Talent Show. Mr Archie Whittaker and several beautiful young ladies of North Side also graced the Flex with their presence to share information about their Heritage Festival Queen Costume Competition.










The "Determined Youth" of the week was Micheal Testori of St. Ignatius High School and our Person who "Perspires to Inspire" others was Coach Elbert McLean of Bodden Town FC

New Production Assistants


New additions to YouthFlex Production Team

YouthFlex production team has two new members Shanarah & Chadia from the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre. The two brilliant young ladies will be assisting in the production of YouthFlex until July 2011 as part of their BTEC course in Creative Media. They write scripts, they record vox pox, they edit recordings and they read the news, they take pictures and they run errands, they also pose for camera. See

Determining the happenings at Cayman Academy



Wednesday October 6th marked the opening of the Season of Determination hosted by Kim. The season opener featured the three spokespersons of the 2010 Census, Ms Tammy Ebanks, Charles Brown and 2010 YCLA Recipient Collin Anglin. The Census will determine the future plans for the population in the Cayman Islands and it will also determine how many people are usually resident in the Cayman Islands in 2010. We also had guests from Cayman Academy on the show to promote their upcoming Reading Week. Their interview was a bit brief so they will be back again on Wednesday October 13 to complete thier interview and fill us in on the happenings of their Reading Week.


Next wednesday we hit the road to hangout at the Lighthouse School to speak with Special Olympic Athletes, their coaches and the staff and students of the Lighthouse School to see how determined they are at meeting their goals in life.

Season of Inspiration Finale on Caribbean Youth Day
















A little dampened by the showers from Tropical Storm Nicole the youth of Cayman took to the airwaves on Wednesday to celebrate Caribbean Youth Day with a 3 hour radio broadcast thanks to Radio Cayman, The Youth Services Unit and Youth Flex Radio Show's sponsor PricewaterhouseCoopers. Wednesday also marked the end of Season 27, the Season of Inspiration that was hosted by Takiyah Smith and Joshua McFarlane. The last week in September also means another year in the books for our beloved radio show YouthFlex who has been broadcasting the voices of the youth of the Cayman Islands since September 24, 2001.Nine years old!










The Caribbean Youth Day radio dialogue was hosted by the Regional Youth Caucus Representative of the Cayman Islands Mikhail McLaughlin and his co-hosts was past RYC Kyle McLean and Miss Teen 2010-11 Miss Leanne Ritch from 3-4pm and 5-6pm. Their guests were youth from the Cayman Islands Further Education Centre, John Gray Memorial Church After School programme, Bodden Town FC, and a young lady from Cayman Brac. The programme also took calls from listeners so they heard the voices of those young and young at heart as well.










YouthFlex closed it season of Inspiration with a dialogue with Year 6 students from the primary schools in the George Town district. These schools are George Town Primary, Red Bay Primary , Lighthouse School, and Prospect Primary. George Town Primary was represented by Elianna Anglin, Red Bay Primary was represented by Kalie Broderick and Prospect Primary was represented by Ethan Hydes, Lighthouse school representive Jonathan McField was unable to attend the show due to miscommunication on transportation. We promise to make it up to you Jonathan!










The next season is the Season of Determination hosted by Kimberly Carlos and our first remote brodcast will be at the Lighthouse School, God's willing in October. We will be speaking to Special Olympic Athletes, their Coaches and Jonathan McField.

After school Programmes Anyone?


On Wednesday September 15, the staff of the Youth Services Unit were the guest on YouthFlex to talk about the myriad of youth programmes offered in the Cayman Islands. The show also saw the two Further Education Centre Interns of the Youth Services Unit in studio. [Shanarah and Chadia]They told everyone about the 2010 Youth Services Directory and encouraged everyone to pick up the poster version of the directory at their Post Office or their favorite super market

Community Inspiration











Today on YouthFlex, past host Mick caught up withthe 2010 YCLA Recipient Collin Anglin to get some words of inspiration from the community youth icon. Also on the show today was Mrs. Marissa Crawford and Tracy Rankine of Cayman Islands Girls Brigade to talk about the programme along with Bethany Smith and Nurse Joanna Rose Wright of the Health Services Authority speaking on Caribbean Wellness Day. Miss Teen develops messages for her platform







Miss Teen 2010-11 Leanne Ritch is committed to making her platform known and felt in all of the land. She has teamed up with YouthFlex Radio Show to develop radio and television messages to promote the awareness of Domestic Violence and how people can stop abusing or stop being abused.
